Caption: Barley grain. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a seed of the barley plant (Hordeum vulgare). A seed contains an embryo (a fertilised ovule from which a new plant can grow) and a supply of food. The food is used either while the embryo develops, or during germination. Seed shapes and textures vary widely, affecting how they are dispersed from their parent plant. Barley is a staple crop throughout the world. Once processed it can be used to make flour, beer and whiskey. Magnification: x208 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
