Caption: Clubmoss stem, light micrograph. Transverse section through the stem of the clubmoss Lycopodium clavatum. This is the central portion of the stem consisting of the inner cortex (red, far left and right), surrounding the central vascular cylinder (stele, centre). The inner cortex consists of thick-walled sclerenchyma cells. The stele consists of thick-walled wood (xylem) cells (deep red) and thin-walled parenchyma cells and phloem (both green). The stele's rim has two layers: the pericycle (pink) and the endodermis (yellow). Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
