Caption: Oat grain. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a seed of the oat plant (Avena sativa). A seed contains an embryo (a fertilised ovule from which a new plant can grow) and a supply of food. The food is used either while the embryo develops, or during germination. Seed shapes and textures vary widely, affecting how they are dispersed from their parent plant. Oats are used mainly as an animal feed but are also used to make porridge and baked products. Magnification: x420 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
