Caption: Horsetail stem, light micrograph. Transverse section through the stem of the common horsetail (Equisetum arvensis). The stem consists of an outer epidermis and an outer cortex of sclerenchyma cells (dark blue) and chlorenchyma cells (pink). The inner cortex has circular air filled cavities (vallecular canals, white). In the inner vascular cylinder, a ring of vascular bundles (dark blue and red) and carinal canals (white), surround the large central canal (white). Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
