Caption: Spore-forming parasites. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of single-celled parasites called microsporidia. These parasites produce spores, which are the infective phase of their life cycle. They are excreted by an infected host and enter the gut of a new host. The spores' contents, the sporoplasm, are injected into the new host's cells via a polar tubule. Once in the cell the parasite makes many copies of itself, all of which produce yet more spores. Magnification: x58000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
