Caption: Fungicidal nylon spheres, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Nylon is a synthetic material that can be made into fibres for textiles or moulded into a solid. These spheres are made from nylon-6 (polycaprolactam) and are biodegradable. They have been developed so that an implanted chemical is slowly released as they break down. In this case, the active chemical is a fungicide, which is used to prevent plants from becoming infected by pathogenic fungi. Magnification: x2500 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
