Oleispira antarctica is a hydrocarbonoclastic (biodegrader of hydrocarbons) marine bacterium, and the type species in its genus. It is psychrophilic (cold loving), aerobic and Gram-negative, with a polar flagellum. Its genome has been sequenced, identifying it as a potentially important organism capable of oil degradation in the deep sea. Interest in the microbial biodegradation of pollutants has intensified in recent years and recent major methodological breakthroughs have enabled detailed analyses of environmentally relevant microorganisms, providing new insights into biodegradative pathways and the ability of organisms to adapt to changing environmental conditions.
