Caption: Rye grain. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a seed of the rye plant (Secale cereale). A seed contains an embryo (a fertilised ovule from which a new plant can grow) and a supply of food. The food is used either while the embryo develops, or during germination. Seed shapes and textures vary widely, affecting how they are dispersed from their parent plant. Rye is mostly used as livestock food and in bread making, where it is mixed with wheat. Magnification: x208 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
