Caption: Salmonella typhimurium bacterium, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This bacterium, also known as Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium, is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped cell that moves by rotating hairlike extensions called flagella (yellow). It is a major cause of food poisoning (salmonellosis) in humans, most commonly caught from infected pork, poultry and eggs. Symptoms include fever, chills, severe diarrhoea and vomiting. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification: x11000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
