Caption: Virus particles and bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of rotaovirus particles (orange) with an Escherichia coli, gut bacterium (green). Rotaviruses are named after their wheel-like appearance, with a rounded core and radiating spikes on the outer protein shell. They cause vomiting and diarrhoea and are the most common cause of severe diarrhoea in children. Escherichia coli is a normal part of the intestinal flora, where they aid digestion. However, some strains can produce toxins that lead to severe illness. Magnification: x50000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
