Caption: Leaf stoma. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a stoma on a leaf of the monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana). The slit at centre is the opening of the stoma, formed by guard cells that open and close to allow gas exchange. Air enters the plant through the stomata, and the carbon dioxide in the air is used in photosynthesis. Air passing out of the plant through the stomata includes the oxygen produced during photosynthesis. Magnification: x2200 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
