Caption: Tensile test sample of an iron aluminide intermetal. An intermetal is an alloy in which the components are present in an exact proportion. At this proportion, the atoms form a lattice structure of their positive ions, the valence electrons being able to move freely through the sample. The bonding force (a metallic bond) is the electrostatic force between the ions and the free electrons. Intermetals can withstand very high temperatures as a result of this bonding, and so are being studied for use in jet engines and in panels for high-speed aircraft.
