Caption: Leaf structure. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a soya (Glycine max) leaf. The outer layers (epidermis) of the leaf are made up of circular cells. The leaf interior contains palisade mesophyll (bright green) and spongy mesophyll (paler green). The palisade cells contain chloroplasts, sites of photosynthesis. Spongy mesophyll have fewer chloroplasts as they are more involved with gas exchange. At centre left is a vascular bundle made up of xylem and phloem vessels, which transport water, nutrients and hormones. Magnification: x400 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
