Caption: Gorse (Ulex europaeus) stigma (green) with pollen grains (yellow), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Pollen grains are reproductive structures produced by the male parts of flowering plants. The stigma is the female part of a flowering plant. Pollen grains that settle here can end up fertilising the flower, producing the seed for a new plant. Magnification: x250 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
