Caption: Lily pollen grain on rosemary leaf. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain (yellow) from a lily flower (Lilium sp.), among leaf hairs (trichomes) on the underside of a leaf from a rosemary plant (Rosmarinus officinalis). Pollen grains are reproductive structures produced by the male parts of flowering plants. Trichomes are specialised structures that may perform several functions, such as preventing water loss or deterring animals from eating the plant. Magnification: x530 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
