Caption: Head of a shield bug (Acanthosoma sp.), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This insect is also known as a stink bug for the pungent liquid it emits if disturbed. The two compound eyes (red) are either side of the antennae, and above the mouthparts. The two front legs are at left and right. Behind the head is the characteristic ridges and shield-like shape of this insect's body. Magnification: x20 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
