Caption: Human tongue surface. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of epithelial cells on the surface of a human tongue. These are flat, scale-like squamous cells that are constantly shed and replaced. The epithelium covers the sensory papillae (small projections, not seen) on the tongue, which are sensitive to several different sensory stimuli, including taste. Magnification: x104 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
