Caption: Sleeping sickness parasites. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Trypanosoma sp. parasites (yellow) amongst red blood cells. Trypanosomes are protozoa that cause the disease African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) and are carried in the saliva of the tsetse fly. When the fly bites a human, the trypanosomes enter the new host's bloodstream and spread to the nervous system. This causes lethargy, tremors and confusion, and leads to coma and death. The disease can be treated with antiprotozoal drugs. Magnification: x2500 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
