Caption: Vibrio metschnikovii bacteria, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Vibrio bacteria are aquatic Gram-negative rod-shaped motile bacteria. The hair-like strands, called flagella, are used in locomotion. Although human infections are rare, V. metschnikovii can cause wound and blood infections (sepsis) when cuts are exposed to contaminated water. Magnification: x17000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
