Caption: Bertrand Russell. Caricature of the British mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Arthur William Russell (1872-1970), the third Earl of Russell. Russell is considered one of the founders of analytical philosophy. His work the Principia Mathematica (1910-1913), with Alfred Whitehead, is considered a milestone in mathematical logic. During World War I he was an active pacifist. He wrote extensively on philosophy and education, founding a progressive school with his second wife. After World War II he wrote at length to world leaders, arguing for nuclear disarmament. In 1950 Russell was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
