Caption: Karl Johann Kautsky (1854-1938), Czech-Austrian philosopher. Kautsky was a leading proponent of Marxism before the First World War. He met Karl Marx and spent time with Friedrich Engels in the late 1880s. Kautsky was an influential member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (the SDP), promoting a Marxist theory of imperialism. His prominence declined after the First World War, though he was a critic of the Bolshevik Revolution and the nature of the Soviet state, calling it a new dictatorship. Works by or edited by Kautsky include 'The Class Struggle' (1899), 'Socialism and Colonial Policy' (1907) and 'The Dictatorship of the Proletariat' (1919). Photograph from the Bain News Service.
