Caption: Intestines, X-ray artwork. The intestines receive semi-digested food from the stomach and continue the process of digestion. In the small intestines, digestive enzymes are added and nutrients absorbed from the food. In the large intestines, water is reabsorbed into the body before the resulting faeces are passed to the rectum. This X-ray artwork also shows the backbone (upper right) and a hand is seen behind the abdomen. The black fluid passing through the intestines could represent food, or a barium meal being used to diagnose disorders of the digestive system.
