Caption: Salt lake mining, Senegal. Aerial photograph of boats, piles of salt (white), and a village on the shores of Lake Retba (the 'Rose Lake'), a salt lake in Senegal. This salt lake, 40 kilometres north of Dakar, is mined for its salt deposits. The pink colour of the lake is due to extremophile bacteria that are found in its waters. In this case, the bacteria are halophiles, thriving on the high salt concentration that ranges from 80 to 300 grams per litre.
