Caption: Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of coal "fly ash", collected from Didcot Power station. Technically termed "pulverised fuel ash", the dust is the product of the complete combustion of coal, and is prevented (to a degree) from escaping from the stacks by the use of electrostatic scrubbers. The ash is recycled, providing ballast for the construction industry due to its excellent packing and compression characteristics. Mag. X 13,800 (10x8).
