Caption: Mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a mosquito (family Culicidae). The mosquito's head is dominated by its large compound eyes (multicoloured), between which are two antennae (feathery structures). The proboscis (long tube-like extension) is used to pierce the skin and suck the blood of an animal host. Several mosquito species are vectors for animal and human diseases, the most renown of which being malaria, West Nile virus, dengue fever and yellow fever.
