Caption: Pollen grains, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Pollen grains are reproductive structures produced by the male parts of flowering plants. They contain the male sex cells (gametes), and are dispersed by wind and pollinators, such as insects, to other flowers. If they land on the female parts of a flower of the same species, fertilisation can take place, leading to the formation of a seed and a new plant. Pollen is also consumed as a health food, due to the concentrated nutrients it contains.
