Caption: Eciton army ant, coloured environmental scanning electron micrograph (ESEM). One of the small compound eyes (blue) is on the head at upper centre, below one of the antennae. The large mandibles (biting mouthparts) are at lower left. The legs, thorax and abdomen are also seen. Columns of army ants are capable of causing great destruction, stripping vegetation and prey from the route of their march. Ants are social insects that live in colonies that can contain millions of individuals. They are found worldwide in a diverse range of habitats.
