Caption: Ranger 4 spacecraft launch, Atlas-Agena rocket, 1962. Ranger 4 was a spacecraft launched by NASA on 23 April 1962 to study the Moon. The launch was carried out with an Atlas LV-3 and Agena-B rocket combination. Due to an onboard computer failure, Ranger 4 crashed into the Moon on 26 April 1962 without returning any data. It was the first US spacecraft to reach the surface of another world. Photographed on 23 April 1962, at Launch Complex 12 (LC-12) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA.
