Caption: Fire ants research. Researcher holding up a petri dish containing fire ants, marked 'fire ants biocontrol'. This is part of work being done in New Mexico, USA, by the Wildlife Conservation Society. They are investigating ways to control invasions of fire ants. Fire ants are an aggressive type of ant with a sting that can cause extreme pain and sometimes death. One biological control method being tested is the use of phorid flies, which are parasites on ants.
