Caption: Ant communications research. Researcher watching ants navigate a set of pathways. Ants communicate with each other using chemical messages (pheromones), and learn which is the shortest route to take. When that path is blocked or busy, the ants willl move naturally towards a the next-best route. This behaviour is being studied by the French company Eurobios, which is seeking to apply this principle to communications networks.
