Caption: Bowlingual dog translator. Dog owner with his dog, demonstrating the dog-to-human translator Bowlingual. This device was developed by the Japanese toy company Tokara (sales stand in background and at right) and was launched in 2002. The device analyses the dog's bark (transmitted from a wireless microphone attached to the dog) and places it in one of six emotional categories: happy, sad, frustrated, guarded, assertive, and needy. The pet owner's handheld device then displays phrases representing that emotion.
