Caption: Kidney tissue death. Light micrograph of a section through kidney tissue following an infarction. An infarction is tissue death (necrosis) caused by blockage of the tissue's blood supply (ischaemia). Here, the infarction is the pale region at left, and the red area is hyperaemia (an increase in blood flow), in which red blood cells surround the necrotic tissue in an effort to supply oxygen.
