Caption: White asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral. Asbestos fibres can also be blue grey, green, or brown. The fibres are very resistant to heat and chemicals and so can be used to make fire-proof fabrics, brake linings and electrical and heating insulation. Asbestos is highly toxic when inhaled as dust particles. Prolonged inhalation causes a fatal lung disease known as asbestosis.
