Caption: Fibrous tissue excised from the hand of a patient with Dupuytren's contracture and trigger finger. Both conditions cause one or more fingers to become fixed in a bent position. Dupuytren's contracture occurs when tissue in the palm of the hand thickens and shortens, preventing the tendons attached to the fingers from moving freely. Trigger finger occurs when the sheath around a tendon becomes irritated and swells, which pinches the tendon and prevents it from moving smoothly.
