Caption: Marine bacteria in cancer research. Researcher Jean Guezennec using an endoscopic microscope to study polymers (white) produced by marine bacteria. He is studying them for possible anti-cancer properties. The magnified view of the polymer is seen on the screen in the background. These bacteria are found at great depths in and around hydrothermal vents. This work is being carried out at a centre operated by the French oceanographic research institution Ifremer.
