US athlete James Cleveland ('Jesse') Owens (1913-1980) at the start of the men's 200 metres final at the 1936 Olympics (held in the Olympiastadion, Berlin, Germany). The final took place on 5 August 1936, and the gold medal was won by Owens in a new world record time of 20.7 seconds.
