Caption: Fungal heart infection, light micrograph. Section through a vegetation (lump) on the endocardium of one of the mitral valves, showing a fungal infection (purple filament). The endocardium is the tissue that lines the inner heart and forms the valves, including the mitral valves. This growth arose independently, probably as the result of an autoimmune disease, but then became opportunistically infected by the yeast Candida albicans.
