Compounds such as this were originally used because they were stable, and remained toxic to insects for long periods. However, they are toxic to other animals too, and due to their stability they accumulate in the food chain, damaging all forms of life rather than just the ones they were designed to kill. For this reason, many compounds of this nature have been banned in favour of safer alternatives.
