Caption: Light micrograph of Botryococcus sp. freshwater algae. Botryococcus forms colonies of oval cells, embedded in tough, irregular mucilage. The mucilage contains lipid globules excreted from the cells. These lipids have been the subject of investigations focused upon development of renewable sources of energy. Culture material of the Culture Collection of Algae at the University of Cologne, Germany. Microscopic contrast method : Differential interference contrast. Magnification 580x when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
