Caption: Dredging machine, 16th century artwork. The dredge is at left, and a system of pulleys on the bank and on a floating platform, are being used to drag the dredge across the body of water to be cleared. This is an engraving from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The book was titled Theatre des instrumens mathematiques et mechaniques (Theatre of mathematical and mechanical instruments). This artwork is from an edition published in Lyon in 1596.
