Caption: Mechanised plough, 16th century artwork. This plough uses both oxen and a mechanical guidance and pulley system, operated by the two men at centre. A third man is guiding the plough. This is an engraving from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The book was titled Theatre des instrumens mathematiques et mechaniques (Theatre of mathematical and mechanical instruments). This artwork is from an edition published in Lyon in 1596.
