Caption: PHARYNX, DRAWING. Pharynx and larynx of an infant (posterior view). From the top to the bottom : - rhinopharynx with : nasal fossae (including the nasal conchae), soft palate, - oropharynx with : root of the tongue, epiglottis, - laryngopharynx with : opening of the larynx, glottis, cricothyroid membrane, - oesophagus and trachea. In an infant, the opening of the larynx and the back of the nasal fossae are much closer than in an adult. The height of the pharynx compared to the back of the tongue enables to avoid false routes when the milk is swallowed (it passes on the sides even if the valve of the trachea is closed).
