Caption: Fractured scaphoid wrist bone with subchondral cysts, X-ray. The scaphoid bone is one of the eight carpal bones of the wrist. The scaphoid is at centre right, with the subchondral cysts (sometimes a sign of osteoarthritis) seen as grey areas. Scaphoid fractures are the most common wrist fracture. Treatment can involve inserting a pin to hold the fractured bone together as it heals. For an alternative view, see image C038/6672.
