Caption: Lagoon nebula, Hubble Space Telescope image. This is an emission nebula, a huge cloud of gas and dust that glows as the hydrogen it contains is ionised by radiation from the hot young stars that have formed within it. At the centre of the image is the young star Herschel 36, whose ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds are streaming through the nebula's clouds. Herschel 36, which is one million years old, is 32 times more massive and 40,000 times hotter than the Sun. The Lagoon nebula lies around 4000 light years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius. The region seen here measures about four light years across.
