Caption: Liquid nitrogen being poured over a balloon. The vapour in this picture is made of water droplets condensed from the air by the extremely low temperature. The balloon has shrunk due to contraction of the cooled air inside it. About 78% of the Earth's atmosphere is nitrogen. Normally a gas, it turns into a liquid at temperatures below 77.4 Kelvin (-198 Celsius). Liquid nitrogen is used as a refrigerant in cryogenics, and in low- temperature research.
