Caption: Castor bean aleurone grains. Light micrograph of aleurone grains in cells from the seed of a castor bean plant (Ricinus communis). This sample is from the outer layer of the endosperm tissue of the seed. Aleurone is a key plant seed protein that performs a number of roles. During germination, the aleurone-containing cells secrete an amylase enzyme that breaks down the endosperm starch into sugars that fuel the growth of the seedling. Magnification: x280 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
