Caption: Chloroplasts in Elodea cells. Light micrograph of chloroplasts (green) in cells of the waterweed Elodea. Chloroplasts are the organelles in plant cells responsible for photosynthesis, the capturing of energy from sunlight using the green pigment chlorophyll. The starch grains in the chloroplasts have been highlighted using iodized water. The cell nucleus of the central cell is clearly visible near centre. Magnification: x280 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
