Caption: Lichen fruiting bodies. Lichen growing on a rock, displaying apothecia (white), the fruiting bodies of the fungus component of this organism. Lichen is a symbiotic combination of algae and fungi. An apothecia is a bowl-shaped ascocarp, the fruiting body of ascomycete fungi. It is this structure that produces the fungal spores, contained in structures called asci (sporocysts). This lichen is called Parmelia, an example of a foliose lichen.
