Caption: Mosquito scales. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of scales on the pronotum of a yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti). The pronotum is the structure covering most of the thorax of an insect. This species of mosquito is found throughout tropical Africa and in parts of South America. It is a vector for the transmission of yellow fever, chikungunya, dengue fever and zika viruses to humans. Magnification: x270 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
