Caption: Beetle exoskeleton. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of scales on the external surface of the exoskeleton of a beetle found in a shipment of tea. The scales are flattened versions of structures called setae. Insect exoskeletons are mostly made of a polysacchiride called chitin. A protein called sclerotin is found in the hard surface of an insect exoskeleton. Magnification: x2700 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
